The air was still and humid, most of the houses they passed in darkness. Even on Friday nights, it seemed the townsfolk of Riesgo went to bed early. In Santa Monica, the evening would just be getting started. Most of the downtown bars and restaurants stayed open till the early hours of the morning, and even then there were places you could still get a drink if you knew the right people. On nights when the moon’s pull had been too seductive to resist, Connor had sometimes found himself staggering into one of those haunts after a run, back in human form and with a raging thirst.

“Well, I wasn’t sure what to expect but that was a nice evening,” Connor said.

“Yeah, I’d almost forgotten what a good cook Shanice is,” Andy replied. “And she seemed to like you. But when she kept you behind in the kitchen, what did she want to tell you?”

Connor had thought Andy hadn’t noticed. There was no way he could tell the truth. “She—er—just wanted to make sure you eat your pie. She really thinks you’re all skin and bones, you know. But I’ve always liked my guys lean and wiry.” He put an arm round Andy’s waist, dragging him close.

A car appeared from the road junction up ahead. As its headlights came closer, Andy slipped out of Connor’s embrace. “Maybe we should get home. It’s been a long day and I’m kind of tired.”

“Sure. D’you want me to tuck you up, read you a bedtime story?” Connor teased. He waited till the car had passed before hugging Andy to him again. This time he kissed his mate full on the lips, confident that no one could see them.

He recalled the words he’d spoken to Shanice in her kitchen. He’s very special to me. He broke the kiss.

And growing more special by the day.
